AMA5 Update

The Queensland government is seeking to implement of AMA5 as the standard for the assessment of permanent impairment in the Queensland workers' compensation scheme.

Michael Francis (Q-COMP) and Bill Nevin (ASIEQ) attended the first meeting of the AMA5 Implementation, Stakeholder Working Group on 31 August 2011.

This group was established by the Department of Justice and Attorney-General. The terms of reference of that group include:

  • Analysing the impacts of implementing AMA5 and what it means for stakeholders in the scheme
  • Identifying barriers to implementation
  • Reviewing and simplifying the approach to regulating the calculation of permanent impairment; and
  • Recommending a framework for implementation.

The early work will focus on the development of a Queensland-specific guideline to accompany AMA5 and potentially replace the Table of Injuries.  The New South Wales WorkCover Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment will provide a basis for this document.  At this stage there is no indication of a prospective implementation date.  Please feel free to call your insurer advisor if you have any questions about what's happening.

Presentation now available on the Q-COMP website

The previous newsletter referred to a presentation about important considerations for insurers and medical practitioners relating to shoulder surgery for workers with a diagnosis of frozen shoulder.

A modified version of the power point presentation which formed the basis of that presentation is now available here on the Q-COMP website.
