Independent medical opinion

We've noticed an increasing use of what's commonly referred to as 'independent medical opinion' to base liability decisions to reject and/or cease claims.

To be a genuine independent opinion, a worker should be asked to select from a number of doctors for their examination. If insurers stipulate the worker attend a doctor chosen by the insurer, it brings into question whether the chosen doctor is genuinely 'independent'.

The Insurer performance standard and guideline 6.6 requires insurers to obtain a balanced view by seeking opinions from both the insurer's nominated doctor plus the worker's treating doctor. In the latter case this can be the GP or treating specialist.

This means you have a balanced view to help you make your decision.
